A blast from the past here on DamnJDM as we ask you to take a minute to look at these DamnJDM-members rides. We are ofcourse talking about the BNR32 and BNR35 from our DamnJDM-members and crew Sjbas and Jan which gathered together a while ago. If we only had the BNR34 from our report before that day we only needed a BNR33 to complete the package. Oh well, its a nice goal for next time maybe?
First thing at you'll notice is the size differance between both GT-R's. Eventhough the R32 already isn't small car, the R35 still looks massive in its size!
This original Dutch R35 doesn't need much introduction. Ofcourse all people intrested in cars have heard the amazing stories about this mighty car. A topspeed of 311km/h, 0-100 in a whopping 3.2 seconds, 0-160 only takes 8.5 seconds. A run around the Nurburgring only takes a 7min and 26.7seconds. Almost impossible if you concider thats faster than a Pagani Zonda Club F, Porsche Carrera GT or even a Porsche 911 GT3 RS which also cost ALLOT more than the GT-R. Porsche however claimed that Nissan could have not archieved that time in a stock GT-R as Porsche's own testdriver drove around the ring in a stock GT-R and his fastest time was 7min 54sec. An accussition which Nissan laughed at by sending out a press-release to Porsche inviting there testdrivers to take a "driving-lesson" at Nissan's. Hilarious!
Later that year an independed automagazine tested the GT-R on the Nurburgring to see if the time Nissan claimed was realistic or that Porsche's time in the GT-R was more realistic. At this test the VR38DETT-powered GT-R did a time of 7min 49sec on a not completly dry lap. That might not be the 27 seconds Nissan claims but thats still 5 full seconds quicker that Porsche did on a dry track!
This way the old battle of Nissan versus Porsche continued again just like we've seen at pretty much every Skyline model in History. Even better is the story of the R32 GT-R also known as "Godzilla".
The story of the BNR32 starts in Australia at the famous Bathurst races. In October 1989 the Australian racing-team Gibson get the first BNR32 outside Japan to take it to the track by Nissan since they already drove in the R31 GTS-R before. In the year 1991 and 1992 the BNR32 dominated and won the famous Bathurst 1000 races that were dominated by Ford, Holden and Porsche at that time. The RB26DETT powered, HICAS and Altessa-equiped car was unbeatable.
As the other called brands and there fans started complaining about this situation the organisation made changes in the rules and specifications that clearly would only strike the GT-R but even after the GT-R was adapted to these rules it would still win race of races. An other two rule-changes were made effecting the use of the GT-R negatively but still the GT-R took win after win.
At last hope the organisation of Bathurst only saw one option. Banning the BNR32 from the event and so they did. They came up with a new rule that all cars had to run a V8-engine which the R32 unlike most other cars competing at the age ofcourse did not have. Or they should drive in the 2000cc Class.
Looking back at this decision allot of people see this as the beginning of the end for Bathurst. And the GT-R? It just moved on and kept winning at allot of other races but Bathurst still gained him the nickname "Godzilla" as in "the monster from Japan.
